The Instituto Moreira Salles (IMS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the safekeeping, promotion, and development of diverse artistic expression within Brazil. Founded by Walther Moreira Salles (1912-2001) in 1990, the IMS contains important archives in four areas: photography, literature, music, and iconography, spanning from the 19th century to present day. Much of the material in the IMS’s archives, as well as a calendar of (mostly free) events, is available on the IMS’s website. The IMS in Rio is located in the neighborhood of Gávea, very close to Rocinha. On recent projects involving the community of Rocinha, the IMS has partnered with two local institutions: the Museu Sankofa Memória e História da Rocinha and the Biblioteca-Parque da Rocinha.
